Expanding a Cape Cod in Mount Lebenon

Action Builders completed a rear bedroom addition to this classic Cape Cod home in Mt. Lebanon, creating much-needed living space for a growing family. The project included constructing a new upper-level bedroom addition off the back of the home, building a deck off the main level below, and tying the new space seamlessly into the existing structure—both structurally and aesthetically.

Expanding to Stay in the Neighborhood They Love
After welcoming a new baby, the homeowners needed additional bedroom space but didn’t want to leave their prime Mt. Lebanon location and highly rated school district. Rather than move, they chose to invest in their current home allowing them to gain the space they needed while staying in the neighborhood they love.
Smart, Seamless Integration
To connect the new addition to the existing layout, we created a simple breakthrough at the top of the original staircase, utilizing the space where a window had previously been. This approach allowed for a natural transition into the new bedroom without significantly disrupting the home’s existing footprint.
The new bedroom includes two closets for ample storage, and we installed hardwood flooring to match the existing floors throughout the house—ensuring the addition feels original to the home, not like an afterthought.
Below the new bedroom, we constructed a deck off the main level, adding functional outdoor living space that enhances both everyday enjoyment and long-term value.
Living Through Construction
The homeowners remained in the house throughout construction. The majority of the work was completed in approximately three months, with an additional month dedicated to final details and finishing touches. Careful planning and phased construction allowed the family to maintain their routine while their home was thoughtfully expanded around them.
